Create and manage API keys

Create a key in Settings, store it safely, and revoke it if it leaks.

API keys let your own software send messages through FortWave. Each key gives full access to your account's API, so treat it like a password.

Create a key

  1. Open Settings from the user menu, then API keys under Developer.
  2. Select Create API Key, give it a Key Name that says where it will be used (for example website-production), and select Create Key.
  3. Copy the key straight away and store it somewhere safe, such as your server's environment variables or a secrets manager.

Keep keys safe

  • Use keys only from your server. Never put them in a website, a mobile app or a public code repository.
  • Create one key per application or environment, so you can revoke one without breaking the others.
  • The Last Used column shows when each key was last used. Revoke keys you no longer need.

Revoke a key

Select Revoke next to the key. It stops working immediately, and any request that uses it is refused. Do this at once if a key may have leaked.

Next: Send your first SMS with the API.
