SMS delivery statuses and credit counting

What pending, sent, delivered and failed mean, and how message length decides how many credits an SMS uses.

Delivery statuses

Every SMS you send appears in the history on SMS → Messages, where you can search and filter by status and date.

  • Pending: the message was created and is queued for delivery to the carrier.
  • Sent: the carrier accepted the message and sent it on.
  • Delivered: the carrier confirmed the message reached the phone.
  • Failed: the carrier could not deliver it, for example because the number is invalid or unreachable.

If you send through the API, you can receive these updates automatically with a webhook. See Send your first SMS with the API.

How many credits does an SMS use?

One credit covers one SMS segment. How much text fits in a segment depends on the characters you use:

  • Standard characters (letters, digits and common punctuation): 160 characters in one segment. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 characters.
  • Emoji and other special characters: 70 characters in one segment. Longer messages are split into parts of 67 characters.

For example, a 200-character message in plain text uses 2 credits, but the same message with one emoji uses 3.
